On May 14th, 2015  one hundred public interest groups  released an Open Letter to the Government of Ontario calling on Ontario to intervene as Ontario Power Generation's sole shareholder. 


On September 18th, 2014,  as part of their closing remarks, the Joint Review Panel announced the deadline for final comments from hearing intervenors government departments.  Final comments must be received by 11:59 pm on Thursday, October 9th, 2014 and are limited to ten pages. No new information can be added - final comments must be based on information that has already been made part of the public record for the hearing. Ontario Power Generation has an additional ten days and an additional 40 pages. Transcripts and video recordings are available on-line for reference in preparing final comments. All submissions filed since the review began in 2006 are available through the public registry maintained by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.

Panel Announces Hearing will be Recommence
On March 25, 2014 the Joint Review Panel for Ontario Power Generation's Proposed Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive wastes announced that it will be reconvening the hearing after receiving all of the additional information required of OPG since the hearing adjourned in October 2013.

As indicated in their March 25th Notice, "the purpose of the additional hearing days will be to provide the Panel and Interested Parties with the opportunity to address any outstanding questions in relation to the subjects addressed in information requests issued by the Panel since November, 2013" and "Details related to the focus, procedures, deadlines and scheduling of the additional hearing days will be provided in the near future."


Opportunity to Comment on Papers
The Joint Review Panel commissioned two expert papers and has invited the public to comment on the papers. The opportunity to comment is available to anyone with an interest in the papers or the DGR project. 
  • Stigma and the Stigmatization of Place: A Paper commissioned by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission by Dr. William Leiss
  • Review of OPG's Application of (a) Environmental Assessment (EA) Methodology with Emphasis on the Prediction of the Significance of Adverse Environmental Effects, and (b) Cumulative Effects Assessment by Dr. Peter Duinker

Federal Hearing Announced -  Hearing begins September 16th 2013 in Kincardine

On June 18,  the Joint Review Panel issued its notice that a public hearing on Ontario Power Generation's proposed "Deep Geological Repository" for radioactive wastes would begin on September 16th, 2013 in Kincardine, wth the hearings to be held in Kincardine and Port Elgin, at the Royal Canadian Legion in  Kincardine from  September 16 – October 5  and in the Saugeen Shores Community Complex in  Port Elgin from October 7 – October 12, 2013.  On October 1, 2013 the Joint Review Panel announced that they were adding three additional hearing days to dedicate more time to the topic of  licensing, permits and authorizations. The hearing schedule for October 28-30 is now posted on the CEAA public registry.  Details on the opportunity for registered participants to provide closing comments are also now posted.

"Time permitting, members of the public who have not already done so may have the opportunity to register at the hearing to make an oral statement to the Panel" (Public Hearing Information Sheet, issued September 13th)

The deadline to register as a participant in the hearing  was July 5th.   The on-line registration form has now been disabled by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, but if you missed the July 5th deadline and would like to "request" to register late,  you can complete  a Word version of the registration form and send it by email to [email protected].
