Ontario Power Generation is proposing to bury several different types of radioactive waste on the shore of Lake Huron, placing them in rooms carved out of limestone approximately 680 metres below the surface and approximately 650 metres inland from Lake Huron.
The underground repository would be very large - approximately 15 hectares on the surface and twice that size underground – and would accommodate very large amounts of radioactive wastes that have been generated during the operating life and refurbishment of Ontario’s nuclear reactors. Ontario Power Generation’s most recent estimate is that 200,000 m3 of various wastes in an estimated 53,000 containers would be placed in the repository over a period of 35 to 40 years. The shafts would eventually be sealed with a sand/clay mixture and concrete. |
