When bad ideas get worse: The largest clean-up operation in mining history will start at the Asse II nuclear waste repository in Germany. In January 2010 the German government decided to unearth more than 125,000 drums of nuclear waste during the next 15 years. The radioactive leak found at the Asse II waste storage facility has become a major issue in the debate about nuclear energy in Germany. In 2009 the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) took over operations for the Asse II.
